Bethune Bulldogs 2015 - 16 Highway Hockey League Champions

Bethune Bulldogs win Highway Hockey League Championship two years in a row…the Bethune Bulldogs defeated the Lumsden Monarchs 12-6 in Lumsden on Monday evening and then 8-1 on Tuesday evening in Bethune to claim the Robert Schultz Cup for the second year in a row. 

On Monday evening in Lumsden, All Star awards were presented to Left Wing Kyle Johnson, Defenceman Andrew Perrault and Coach Darrell Haysom prior to the game start. Bethune held a 5-3 lead after one period in this game and 7-3 after the second period before scoring five goals in the third period. Mike Reich scored four times including a power play goal and had one assist to lead the way for the Bulldogs. Drew George had a hat trick that included both a power play goal and a shorthanded goal. Joel Kot also had a hat trick which included two power play goals. Lucas Ulmer scored a power play goal and Kyle Ross also scored for the Bulldogs. Carter Selinger scored twice including a power play tally to lead the Monarchs. Brodie Schuette scored a shorthanded goal and the rest of the Monarch’s scoring came from Andrew Perrault, Kyle Johnson and Brady Aulie. Ryan Senft picked up the win in net for the Bulldogs and Kurtis Sollosy and Jackson Latrace were in net for the Monarchs.

On Tuesday evening awards were given out prior to the game to Bethune Coach Don Ulmer for the Pennant trophy, Russ Nielson for All Star defenceman for the second year in a row and Kyle Ross received plaques for winning the Tyson Sievert Scoring Trophy and being voted All-Star Center. We saw a very good first period. Jake Ulmer opened the scoring nine minutes into the first period and that goal was answered three minutes later by Liam Brennan for the Monarchs. Lucas Ulmer would score late in the period and the Bulldogs had a 2-1 lead going into the second period. The Bulldogs outshot the Monarchs 21-17 in the first period. In the Second period Kyle Ulmer scored 51 seconds into the period and then Russ Nielson would score and Drew George would score twice to give the Bulldogs a 6-1 lead going into the third period. The Monarchs held a 33-32 lead on the shot clock. Drew George would complete his natural hat trick five minutes into the third period and later in the period Joel Kot would score a shorthanded goal to make the final 8-1. Bethune Bulldogs 2015-16 Highway Hockey League Champions. Ryan Seibel stopped 44 shots for the win in net for the Bulldogs and Kurtis Sollosy stopped 35 shots in the Monarch’s net.

Drew George from Bethune won the playoff scoring race with 13 goals and 13 assists for 26 points in six games. Kyle Ross from the Bulldogs was second with 7 goals and 15 assists for 22 points in 6 games.  Carter Selinger from the Monarchs finished third with 8 goals and 9 assists for 22 points.  Ryan Seibel and Ryan Senft from the Bulldogs were both a perfect 3-0 in league playoffs in net.

Now it is on to Rosetown on Thursday evening for the Bethune Bulldogs to play the Redwings in game two of the Provincial ‘A’ final that they lead 1-0.  Previous winners of both a league title and a Provincial ‘A’ championship from the Highway Hockey League are the Dysart Blues in 1987, Southey Marlins in 2004, Cupar Canucks in 2013 and the Wynyard Monarchs in 2014. For the record, The Raymore Rockets won both league and Provincial ‘C’ in 1980, 1988 and 1997. The Avonlea Arrows won both league and Provincial ‘D’ in 2005.
