QVHHL Update December 20th, 2021

Two games on Friday evening and three games on Saturday were played this past weekend. In Grenfell the Spitfires got a goal from Tyler Krauser in the first period and then Sanfred King scored early in the second period to take a 2-0 lead. Milestone would then score with a goal from Shelby Gray. The Spitfires would score immediately after that when Lane Harbor scored. That would be all the Spitfires needed as Harbor would complete the natural hat trick with another goal in the second and a power play goal in the third. The league's leading scorer Logan Gorsalitz would score the other Milestone goal to make the final 5-2 Spitfires. Mitch Kilgore picked up the win in the Grenfell net. Thomas Spence was in the Milestone net. Milestone had five minor penalties and Grenfell had three. In Southey, the Balcarres Broncs dropped their second game in a row 5-2 to the Marlins. The game was tied 1-1 after one period on goals from Derek Frater from the Marlins and Cory Kosloski for the Flyers. The Broncs would take the lead early in the second on a goal from Riley Nargang. Halfway through the frame the Marlins would tie things up on a power play goal from Derek Frater. Late in the period Jake Tesorowski would score and it was 3-2 for the Marlins going into the third period. In the third Arthur Miller would score with eight minutes late and then Mason Mullaney would score an empty net goal late to make the final 5-2. Southey took five minor penalties and Milestone took seven. Cam Pateman picked up the win in the Southey net and Dean Brothen was in the Balcarres net.
On Saturday evening, The Marlins picked up their second win of the weekend with a 5-4 win over the Bethune Bulldogs in Bethune. Chaston Sare and Tyson Zurowski pujt the Marlins up 2-0 and Cole Kaiswatum would score for the Bulldogs and it was 2-1 heading to the second. Drew Wilde would put the Marlins up 3-1 early in the seond but Jake Ulmer would score within a minute and it was 3-2. Carson Robertson would score for the Bulldogs with just over 5 minutes left in the period to tie game up but Mason Mullaney would score late and the Marlins had a 4-3 lead going into the third period. Josh grimm would score with just over 3 minutes left in the third period to put the Marlins up 5-3. The Bulldogs responded just over a minute later with a goal from Cain Thompson. There would be no more scoring and the Marlins would win 5-4. Cam Pateman stopped 31 shots in the Southey net for the win and Duncan Paddock stopped 31 shots in the Bethune net. Bethune had one minor penalty and Southey had five and one misconduct. In Balcarres, the Grenfell Spitfires won their second game of the weekend and the Balcarres Broncs lost their third straight game 3-2. Kale Haylock scored on the power play to give the Spitfires a 1-0 lead heading into the second peiod. The Broncs responded with two goals in the second period with a power play goal from Justin Bernhardt and a goal from Brayden Frank. In the third period Lane Harbor would score to tie game up and then with four minutes left in the third period Tyler Bird scored and the Spitfires would hold on for a 3-2 victory. Balcarres had 6 minor penalties and Grenfell had 4. Mitch Kilgore picked up his league leading fifth win in net for the Spitfires and Dean Brothen was in net for the Broncs. The final game of the weekend saw Milestone defeat the Odessa/Vibank Bruins 9-2. Shelby Gray, Austion Bourhis and Dytlan Giblett lead the way for the Flyers with two goals each. Other goals came from Logan Gorsalitz, Levi Petrinchuk and Cody Hegion. All Bruins scoring came from Marshall Wilton. Riley Ross picked up the win in the Milestone net and Shane Bloomquist was in the Bruins net. The Flyers had 3 minor penalties and the Bruins had 2.
The Bethune at Lumsden game was postponed on Sunday and will be rescheduled.
Logan Gorsalitz from the Flyers leads our scoring race with 22 points.Gorsalitz also leads the league with three game winning goals.Corey Kosloski from the Broncs is next with 18 points and Kyle Stroh from the Bruins is next with 17 points. Marshall Wilton and and Zak Zborosky from the Bruins along with Arthur Miller and Chaston Sare from the Marlins are all tied with 15 points. Kayle Haylock from the Spitfires leads all scorers with three power play goals. Mitch Kilgore from the Spitfires leads all goialies with 5 wins and a 1.80 GAA. Riley Ross from Milestone is next with 4 wins and a 2.99 GAA. Thomas Spence from the Flyers, Cam Pateman from the Marlins and Tim Ostrysnink from the Bruins are tied for third with 3.00 GAA.
The top power play in the league belongs to the Grenfell Spitfires which is clicking at a 34.8% success rate. The top penalty kill unit belongs to the Milestone Flyers with a 84.2% success rate. Well, we have made it through the first half of the season. I want to thank all of you for supporting senior hockey. I would ask that everyone take a rest, please be safe and enjoy some important family time in the next couple of weeks. We do have one game on Tuesday, December 28th when Lumsden is in Bethune. Our next game will be January 2nd.
