Submitted by Gerry on Mon, 11/15/2021 - 11:21
So it begins...we are back playing hockey. On Friday evening our first game was played in Southey. The Marlins defeated the Bethune Bulldogs 6-5. The Marlins scored in the first period on a goal from Landon Walters and extended their lead to 2-0 with a goal from Arthur Miller in the second period. The third period saw nine goals. The Bulldogs tied the game up early in the third with goals from Cain Thomson and Sterling Bear. Derek Frater would then score and the Marlins were back up 3-2. Quickly after that goal Sterling Bear would score his second goal of the evening and the game was tied 3-3 wth 12 minutes left in game. Craig Lefebrve would then score with 8 minutes left in period to get the Marlins back in the lead. The Bulldogs would tie the game with a goal from Jake Ulmer but a quick response from the Marlins on the power play saw Chaston Sare score and the Marlins were back up 5-4. Sare would then score shorthanded with less than three minutes left to put the Marlins up by two. Lucas Ulmer would then score on that power play and the Bulldogs were back to within one. There was no more scoring and the final was 6-5 for the Marlins. Kevin Orthner would pick up the win for the Marlins in net and Duncan Paddock was in net for the Bulldogs. The Marlins had 5 minor penalties and a major. The Bulldogs had 7 minor penalties, a major and a misconduct. Cam Reich from the Bulldogs had an instigator penalty and was suspended one game.
The Bulldogs opened their home schedule the following evening against the Odessa/Vibank Bruins and lost 9-5. It was 4-2 after one period for the Bruins and they extended their lead to 7-4 after two periods. Eamon Milligan lead the way for the Bruins with 3 goals Jonas Thomson and Kris Treso each had a goal on the power play. Rounding out their scoring saw Logan Herchak. Michael Reiger, Justin Schaeffer and Zak Zborosky with goals. Bethune Bulldogs scoring came from Jake Ulmer, Lucas Ulmer, Cole Kaiswatum on the power play, Russ Nielson and Jonas Thomson. Shane Bloomquist stopped 26 shots to pick up the win in the Bruins net. Arlen Kushniryk stopped 22 shots in the Bethune net. The Bruins had two minor penalties and a double minor penalty. The Bulldogs had five minor penalties.
Also on Saturday evening the Grenfell Spitfires were in Lumsden to play the Monarchs. It was the first time we have been in the box in almost a year and it took a period to get acquainted with things and to keep the glasses from fogging up. This was a good game to watch. The first period saw the Monarchs take 8 shots in the first ten minutes before Grenfell had their first shot. With less than five minutes left in the period, Josh Lees would score to put Grenfell up 1-0. With 22 seconds left in the first Sam Aulie would get the Monarchs on the board and it was tied 1-1 going into the second period. The game changed abruptly when Braeden Adamyk and Owen Schnell scored 10 seconds apart in the first two minutes of the period to give the Monarchs a 3-1 lead. The Spitfires would come back as Lane Harbor would score shorthanded and then later in the period Tyler Krausher would score to even things up. Kevin Dufour would score late in the period for the Monarchs to give Lumsden a 4-3 lead going into the third period. Kyle Johnson would then score on the power play and the Monarchs were back up by two. Jayden Issac would score with under 8 minutes left in period and it was 5-4 for Lumsden. Sam Aulie would then score his second goal of the game to restore the two goal lead for the Monarchs. Kevin Dufour would add an empty net goal to make the final score 7-4 Lumsden. Dawson McCauley made 30 saves in the Lumsden net to secure the win for the Monarchs. Nate Ferris made 35 saves in the Grenfell net. Lumsden had three minor penalties and a fighting major. Grenfell had five minor penalties and a major for fighting. Tyler Lees from the Monarchs and Craig Karius both received a one game suspension for receiving a game misconduct in the last 10 minutes of the game.
On Wednesday evening the Lumsden Monarchs will be in Bethune to play the Bulldogs. This weekend sees Odessa/Vibank in Grenfell for the Spitfire's opening home game. On Saturday evening we have three games. The Milestone Flyers start their season against the Odessa/Vibank Bruins, the Lumsden Monarchs travel to Grenfell for the first rematch of the year and Balcarres Broncs open up their season in Bethune against the Bulldogs.
