There were only two games played the first weekend of the New Year. On Friday evening the Wynyard Monarchs scored once in the last minute of the first period and then in the first minute of the second period and then scored four more in the third period on their way to a 6-1 victory over the Lumsden Monarchs. Lyle Ostapowich (one SHG) and Donovan Hall led the way with two goals each and Chad Mazurak and Eric Popadynec scored the other goals for the Wynyard Monarchs. Brady Aulie had the lone goal for the Lumsden Monarchs. David Perkin stopped 31 shots in the Wynyard net for the win and Kurtis Sollosy faced 50 shots in the Lumsden net. Lumsden was assessed nine minor penalties and Wynyard six. On Saturday evening the Wynyard Monarchs hosted the Strasbourg Maroons. Wynyard scored twice in the first period and five times in the second period with 3 power play goals, one shorthanded goal and an even strength goal. The Monarchs scored once in the third period. The Monarchs had three minor penalties, a major and a game misconduct.
We had some teams with personnel shortages on the weekend. Raymore @ Avonlea is being rescheduled and we are trying to get a new date for the Bethune @ Cupar game. The Bethune @ Raymore game will be recorded as a forfeit by Bethune.
This Friday evening Raymore will be in Wynyard at 8:30 p.m. Also on Friday evening, Cupar visits Lumsden and Strasbourg is in Avonlea at 8:00 p.m. On Saturday evening Avonlea is at Wynyard, Cupar is in Bethune and Lumsden is in Strasbourg.
