Semi-Finals providing close games….B. Leffler and J. Ulmer provide game winners in their series....twice....
There are two games completed in each semi-final series and all four games have been one goal games. The Wynyard Monarchs defeated the Cupar Canucks 3-2 last Wednesday to take a 2-0 lead in the semi-final. For the second game in a row Brett Leffler scored on the power play with the winning goal with two minutes left in the third period. In this game the Monarchs scored early on a goal by Dale Spelchen and midway through the first period the Canucks would score on the power play on a goal by Kyle Ross. The Canucks would take the lead in the second period on Ryan Moore’s goal and the Monarchs would tie the game just two and a half minutes later on a Dillon Shewchuk goal. There would be no scoring until Leffler’s game winning goal in the third period. Dave Perkin picked up his fourth win of the playoffs and Jamie Wutke was in net for the Canucks. The Monarchs were assessed five minor penalties while the Canucks had eight penalties. Game three of this series is Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. in Wynyard. If a fourth game is required it will be in Cupar on Friday evening.
In the other semi-final both games went to overtime. In the first game last Tuesday evening in Avonlea, the Bethune Bulldogs scored once in the first period and twice in the second period to take a 3-0 lead. Jake Ulmer scored in the first period and then Mitch Boucher notched a power play goal early in the second period and that was followed by a goal by Derek Fuchs. Late in the second period Calvin Watson scored on the power play and it was 3-1 going into the third period. Midway through the third period Gavin Mievre would score and then with just 1:18 left on the clock James Ardelan would score to send the game into overtime. It took until the second overtime for this tie to be broken as Jake Ulmer scored his second goal of the evening. Ryan Seibel picked up the win in net for the Bulldogs and Nathan Fischl was in net for the Arrows. Both goalies played almost 85 minutes in this game. The Arrows had four minor penalties and the Bulldogs took eight penalties.
Game two of this series took place this past Sunday. You would say this game was just the opposite of the first game considering that Avonlea got goals from Brendon Vanthuyne, James Ardelan and Calder Neufeld to take a 3-0 lead after one period. In the second period Mike Reich scored a power play goal and it was 3-1 heading into the third period. Early in the third period Tory Willfong scored to get the Bulldogs within one goal only to see Avonlea respond quickly with two power play goals from Calder Neufeld and Brendon Vanthuyne and take a 5-2 lead. Midway through the third period Derek Fuchs would score on the power play to get the Bulldogs to within two goals. With 2:48 left in the game Lucas Ulmer would score a shorthanded goal and then with just under two minutes left in the third period Mitch Boucher scored to send the game into overtime again. With just twelve seconds left in overtime period one Jake Ulmer scored the game winner for the second game in a row and the Bulldogs completed the comeback. Ryan Seibel picked up the win in net for the Bulldogs and Nathan Fischl was in net for the Arrows. Both goalies have now played just under 175 minutes in the first two games of this series. The Bulldogs had five minor penalties and the Arrows had four. There were four power play goals and one shorthanded goal on special teams. Game three of this series is Wednesday in Avonlea.
Mike Reich from Bethune leads all scorers in the playoffs with a playoff high seven goals along with six assists for a total of thirteen points. Calvin Watson from Avonlea and Bryan Kauk from Wynyard are next with twelve points. Kauk leads all scorers with ten assists. Chad Mazurak from Wynyard has ten points and he is followed by James Ardelan from Avonlea, Kyle Ross from Cupar and Dustin MacAngus from Bethune each with nine points. Jamie Wutke (2-2) and David Perkin (4-0) from Wynyard lead all goalies with 2.50 GAA’s. Ryan Seibel (4-1) from Bethune with 346 minutes played and Nathan Fischl (2-3) from Avonlea with 334 minutes played lead all goalies in minutes played.
In Provincial ‘A’ play, the Wynyard Monarchs lost to the Bienfait Coalers 4-2 on Saturday evening and then responded with a 6-2 win on Sunday afternoon to force a game three in the semi-final next Sunday evening in Bienfait. In Provincial ‘D’ play the Avonlea Arrows lost to Gull Lake 4-2 on Friday evening and will play Gull Lake at home next Saturday evening in Avonlea at 8:00 p.m. If a third game is required it will be played in Gull Lake on Sunday.
